Pre-Election Press Statement: ELECTION MONITOR CALLS ON ALL ELIGIBLE VOTERS TO
COME OUT EN MASSE FOR THE 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS
Friday 22nd
February, 2019 4pm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been holding daily press
briefings since the 2019 General Elections were postponed to commence on
Saturday 23rd February 2019. This is commendable and has helped to significantly
douse tensions in the country. During the public briefing on Thursday 21st
February 2019 the Hon. Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu formally
released the breakdown by state of the collection of permanent voter cards.
This is a critical activity and it is important it has been done before the
elections kick off.
With
72,775,502 PVCs collected, the number of eligible voters has increased by over
sixteen million since 2015. In addition the PVC collection rate has also
increased by about 5 percent from 81.98% to 86.63%. Over 14.2 million voters
were registered before this election which is 44.1% higher than the over 9.9
million voters registered preceding the 2015 General Elections. Clearly on all
fronts relating to voter inclusion INEC has significantly improved.
A
high voter turnout is critical as it makes the elections more inclusive and
representative. Election Monitor encourages all stakeholders to do their best
within the confines of the law to ensure massive voter turnout in tomorrow’s
Presidential and National Assembly elections.
Election
Monitor makes the following recommendations:
·
All
election riggers and their collaborators irrespective of their status should be
exposed to the appropriate authorities.
·
The
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) should carefully monitor the
flow of cash (local and foreign currencies) on Election Day and flag suspicious
transactions.
·
INEC
must ensure that all election materials are distributed to the right polling
units on Election Day and in a timely manner.
·
Citizens
should avoid taking laws into their own hands but report all security concerns
to the nearest security agents.
·
Security
agencies should identify all individuals who may use social media to spread
false election results and rumours of violence.
·
The
Nigeria Police Force, military and other security agencies must ensure that they
perform their functions with commitment, neutrality and professionalism.
Election
Monitor encourages citizens and all stakeholders to remain peaceful and law
abiding before, during and after the elections. Voters should ensure that they
turn out to vote.
God
bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria
