PRESS STATEMENT: URGENTLY RESOLVING THE FARMER-HERDER CRISES IN NIGERIA

Over the past few days there have been raging controversies over the Rural Grazing Areas (RUGA) programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria. As a responsive and citizen focused leader, His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR decided to suspend the programme which is very commendable.

There is another ‘similarly appearing’ programme of government called the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP). This plan has however been approved by the National Economic Council and seems more acceptable to diverse actors. In addition before government developed the NLTP it has held necessary consultations. A Policy Dialogue was held in Kaduna in April 2017 while a National Conference on the Transformation of the Nigerian Livestock Industry was held from the 11th to 15th September 2017 with over 770 stakeholders present.

Based on researches made, Election Monitor is of the opinion that The Federal Government should proceed with and adopt the NLTP as it is a robust, well thought-out intervention that can truly address the herder-farmer crises in Nigeria. Definitely state governments, the private sector, research institutions and others will be needed to make its implementation successful and impactful to the nation.

Election Monitor as an organization that promotes good governance has made some recommendations for Government to ensure that the NLTP is effectively implemented and achieves its stated objectives.
