PRESS STATEMENT: MITIGATING THE EFFECTS OF THE PANDEMIC
7th April, 2020
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nigeria is making very good progress in its efforts to stop further spread of infectious disease in the country. However different states are at various stages and some states need to get more things in place. States that have zero or very little confirmed cases should be on heightened alert and deploy aggressive prevention strategies while states that have recorded cases should increase their efforts. The increasing number of patients discharged from isolation is encouraging and needs to be sustained.
It is also critical that efforts are made to significantly limit the negative effects of the pandemic on the country especially as relates to the economy.
All health workers, government and private sector leaders and others working assiduously to end this menace are highly appreciated and encouraged to do even more.
As an organization committed to good governance, Election Monitor decided to make some recommendations to government on some issues to be considered for limiting the effects of this scourge on Nigeria (can be used for states as well).
Election Monitor does not support a lock down approach (cessation of movement) for Nigeria in tackling infectious diseases. A timely and aggressive preventive approach (with minimal locations under restriction (e.g. Local Government Area) only where data shows it’s necessary) is recommended. State governments need to do a lot more to keep their states safe. Existing lockdown in some states should not be extended while other preventive measures should be sustained (discussed in more detail in the main document).
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
Nigeria shall prevail!
God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
Signed
Abiodun Ajijola
National Coordinator
